Cylone Bicycle Supply of Portland, OR and Melborne, AUS based KNOG are pleased to announce the upcoming release of the new BLINDER series of LED bicycle head and tail lights.  The new BLINDERS four super bright LED’s pump out 80 lumens of front light and 44 lumens of rear light, and the anodized aluminum face is sonically welded to a polycarbonate housing.  The optimized optics focus the beam and directs the light making the Blinder brighter and visible over 800 meters.  The light features 5 different modes with a three hour constant run time and up to 50 hours in the eco-flash mode.  A “last mode” memory function will return the light to its last mode when the light is turned off/on.  The 39g lights are 100% waterproof and have a built-in USB recharging system that fully charges the lithium polymer battery in 5 hours.  A battery warning indicator will turn red when the battery is low or charging, and green when fully charged.

The event will be celebrated in Portland, OR with a new product launch party on February 24th from 7-10 pm at the Springbox Art Gallery sponsored by KNOG and their U.S. distributor Cyclone Bicycle Supply.  Dealers wishing to attend the gala event should RSVP to Cylclone Bicycle Supply.

Community Cycling Center’s Holiday Bike Drive!

Portland’s cycling community came together this weekend in full support of the Community Cycling Center’s Holiday Bike Drive held at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.  Volunteers filled the hall there on Sunday and over the course of the day gave safety training and over 460 free helmets and bicycles to underprivileged families in N.E. Portland.  The staff at Cyclone Bicycle Supply was honored to be a part of the event, and assisted throughout the weekend in a number of capacities.  We also got to see a lot of our friends from stores throughout the Portland area there on hand twisting wrenches and fitting helmets and lending their support as well.  By far and away the biggest pleasure came from watching the children’s faces light up when they realized they were getting a bicycle for Christmas!  The event is the culmination of a year-long effort by hundreds of volunteers, and is truly a special part of the Portland cycling community!  For more photos of the event, visit our Facebook page!

Kelsey’s Outstanding in Her (Corn) Field!

Our own accounting superstar Triathlete and all round good sport Kelsey Davis got her first taste of Cyclocross this weekend.  On a borrowed bike and shoes she stormed the (corn) field at Kruger’s Farm!  Here’s the story in her words.

It all started at West End Bikes last Monday night. While speaking with one of their employees, the topic of cyclocross came up and I must have shown a bit too much interest in the sport. West End happened to be sponsoring a cyclocross race the following weekend, and Justin said that I should borrow a friend’s bike, and sign up! Five days and an email later, my weekend plans included heading out to Kruger’s farm for the race. I borrowed a friend’s bike and shoes for the weekend and was all set to go. On Saturday I headed out on a “practice” ride in an effort to try and get comfortable on the bike. I ended up climbing up to Skyline three times that day and not really finding any good muddy trails to practice on. The only real cyclocross practice I got from that ride was carrying the bike up some hills.

Sunday morning arrived and I headed out to the course with a friend who raced at 9:40am, long before my 2:00pm race time. While watching the earlier races I realized what I had gotten myself into. Athletes were finishing with their bikes literally 100% covered in mud. Mud was speckled all over their faces and clothes, and the course just looked like a mudslide. I was beginning to wonder if I could even keep a bike upright on the course. 2:00pm finally arrived and I walked warily up to the start line. There were about 200 girls racing with me, and I started at the very back of the pack. The race started and the adventure began! Mud was flying in all directions from the tires trying to grind through the mud. The first corner of the course was by far the muddiest and required a lot of caution in order to make it through without falling off your bike. A set of stairs followed with a short climb following. From there the course was pretty mellow until we arrived back by the start line. A tricky handling section with lots of sharp turns finished up each lap of the course. Throughout the first lap, I was unclipped for about 90% of the course, and ran through the majority of the heavy handling section. By the second lap I was getting more comfortable riding through the mud and realized how much easier it was if I actually clipped in. By the third lap I was riding the whole course except for the short stair/climb area and began to really have fun with the race.

Zero falls…one visit to the cornfield from a fellow athlete falling off of her bike and knocking me off course, and four laps later, I can now say I have completed a cyclocross race!  It may have been my first race, but there will definitely be more.  Perhaps next time I will be wearing my own shoes and riding my own bike!

My Oregon Manifest….The names have been altered to protect the guilty! By Scotty

The Oregon Manifest is a beautiful event that puts human engineering and ingenuity to the test in the world of cycling.  This post has almost nothing to do with any of that.

I decided to volunteer for the BTA (Bicycle Transportation Alliance) this year at the Manifest.  An old buddy by the name of Tom Rousculp needed people to help, and although I should probably be dead last to tell people how to commute on a bike (I ride like a jerk, always have and see no point in changing) I wanted to help out a bud so I put some lipstick on the pig and made nice nice with my “fellow” commuters.  I worked the booth on Friday with the BTA’s lovely Margaux and then on Saturday with several other volunteers.  I handed out stickers and pins, signed up people for the email list, signed up people for the SRAM X.7 drivetrain give-away, and even got a few people signed up as full dues paying BTA members.

The days were filled with fun!  Willy “Soupmule” Slingford was in town working with Levi’s to promote their new Commuter jean, Damon “Hotdog” Wiehl was on hand and racing one of the super bikes, heck even Sleevel Kanieval was there, so he may blog about it later.

As the end of my second volunteer day draws close, I begin to realize that I need to suppress my feelings of guilt from signing up and singing the praises of the BTA to all the citizens while not now or ever having been a member, while at the same time reassuring myself that I am the same person I was before this event started.  How to do this you say?  Through the fog of alcohol!

It turned out that the beer bike had been shut down, and even though I stole several beers from there while the security guard was not looking, there was no way I was going to be able to get a proper fade on at what was turning out to be a snails pace.  So I located my day job supervisor Matt Lace.  I told him we needed beer and he said he would buy if I would fly!  Music to my ears.  I rode to an outpost where there was a layer of dust on everything, (you could actually rent VHS…no kidding), and a Hot Dog turning in the machine was closer to carbon than meat.  I was skeptical, but it was the only option for miles and figured I was going to get nailed on price.

“Hey boss, what are your cheap twelve packs?” I sounded in my singsong and calming vociferation.  “Hamm’s, Pabst, and Milwaukee’s Best Ice are all $5.45.” sounded the shop keep’s reply.

I tried to remain calm.  Poker face, poker face, breath.  He had looked at a paper to find out, and must not work there that often.  Those are six pack prices.  I know that.  I am a seasoned beer purchaser.  His fault, my gain.  I got a twelve of Hamm’s and a twelve of the Best Ice beer Milwaukee has to offer.  I mean come on, it has the highest alcohol content of all the swill quality beers.  I returned to the party.

When I got back and threw my bag open, my intrepid leader Matt Lace said, “Jeezum crow, why did you get Milwaukee’s Best Ice?” (he actually said beast ice and it was a bit more colorful in the wording but I just want us all to be on the same page here).  I cracked a Hamm’s and tossed him one saying, “Willy’s in town.  We’re gonna need that.”  To which Matt Lace shrug nodded in full admission of my right-a-tude.

Sleevel Kanieval got tossed a beer, Lurph from QDW, the cute girl from Levi’s got a Hamm’s handed to her, and Willy “Soupmule” Slingford came over and grabbed two Beast Ice and a Hamm’s.  That type of night was beginning to take shape.

24 beers were vanquished faster than they would have been if mere mortals were involved but these are the type of folk who like to unwind with a brew after a hard day at the spa.  You know, people who can really put it away.  The party was relocated to Slabtown.  Here the QDW corporate card came into play nicely.  We all had a go at the punching machine, the Pop-A-Shot and there was even some arm wrestling.

At this point I would like to give a nod to the person who invented the punching machine.  You put a buck in, punch it once and it registers a number for how hard you hit it.  Add alcohol and you got bags of money.  The person who made this thing is Scrooge McDucking into a giant pool of money, laughing at all the drunks who pay a buck to punch a bag and get a number.  Soupmule hit it the hardest, and Matt Lace was a close #2.  There was a bit of controversy over whether or not Willy had used the “lady” setting.  Also someone roundhouse kicked it and got a score of 666.  DEVIL KICK!!!

This is the part where my night gets a bit hazy.  That’s the point though, right?  Anyways, the fog lifted when I was stuffing everything fried from the Lowbrow Lounge menu into my face.  That was actually how it was ordered too.  Willy went up to the bar and told the man that we needed “everything fried” from the menu.  Willy got the ‘itis quick as he had been to Interbike and four other cities before Portland and was one of the racer’s in the cargo bike race.  I woke him up and made him stand outside while we waited for his cab.  You can’t sleep in bars in Portland.

That’s lame.

New Face in the Office: Kelsey Davis – Accounting Assistant

Cyclone is EXTREMELY happy to announce a new shining face in our office! Her name is Kelsey Davis and has joined our accounting department. So what’s Kelsey’s story?? Well here’s a little bit about her!

Kelsey Joy Davis is a 21 year old accounting graduate who grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She obtained her degreee at Iowa State University whilst also performing the job title of Treasurer for the school’s Triathlon Club. Speaking of triathlons…this girl is quite the athlete! In her high school days, Kelsey was the district champion for cross country while attending Cedar Falls High School.  She completed her first triathlon, Hy-Vee, in 2008; only two years later she had her first triathlon win during the 2010 Hickory Grove Triathlon. All in all, this rockstar athlete has completed 4 triathlons; not to mention she qualified for the Boston Marathon the first time she ever ran a marathon!

Okay, enough with the bragging, aside from being a great athlete here are some other fun facts about the girl handling your invoice questions: she loves the color pink, she can count to 10 in German and her favorite cereal is Lucky Charms! She also enjoys the movie Despicable Me and thinks the miniature tents on display in sporting goods stores are adorable, who doesn’t?!

We’re very excited and happy to have her on our team; so when you call in, make sure you say hello! You might just be saying hello to the next IronMan winner!

West End’s Simple and Professional Approach

Recently Erik Deeter and I visited a new addition to the local Portland bike scene, West End Bikes. Immediately upon arrival I knew that they were doing something right; the store was beautiful, organized and decorated with gorgeous bicycles of varying kinds. As we walked through the store with one of the co-owners, Mark Ontiveros, I was completely assured that my assumptions were correct.

Photo by Jonathan Maus @ BikePortland

My first observation was how smart their retail items were placed throughout the store as well as admiring their selection of product. We were shown a very cool pair of cycling shoes made by Quoc Pham that were very simple and practical. They’re leather with a rubber sole. Simple as that; but guess what…you don’t have to worry about changing your shoes or slipping on covers just to walk into a coffee shop. And they’re quite stylish as well!

Pretty awesome.

The store also has a really great selection of tools and accessories located right in the entry way carrying brands such as Kryptonite, Portland Design Works and Knog. I always appreciate when retail stores layout their merchandise in a way that gets me in and out when I only need 2 or 3 quick items.

In the north corner of the store they have a full mechanic station so you can bring your bike in for a quick fix or a full tune up. West End has an extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff that is more than willing to help with anything you need or answer any questions.

Before we left, Mike France – also a co-owner, showed us their fitting studio upstairs in a loft that overlooks the entire store. Using cameras that help monitor your positioning on the bike they can fit you perfectly to your brand new bike you just picked up in the store or the bike you’ve been riding for years.

Although West End is a Specialized concept store they also carry other extremely reputable brands such as Calfee, Wilier and Beloved. Something on display that caught my eye was Mark’s absolutely gorgeous Calfee bamboo bike. You could easily walk in the store and stare at it for quite some time before even beginning to check anything else out.

Bottom line: if you haven’t checked out West End Bikes (1111 SW Stark St., Portland, OR) do yourself a favor and stop by. Here at Cyclone Bicycle Supply, we’re very happy to have them as a customer and love seeing local businesses thrive.
